Toreros Play Host to No. 3 Gonzaga

San Diego pursues first top-five win in program history

SAN DIEGO – San Diego continues its longest homestand of the season and will try to defeat its first top-five opponent in program history when it plays host to No. 3 Gonzaga on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT.
 
The Toreros (16-10, 5-6 WCC) have suffered back-to-back heartbreaking defeats and are coming off an 88-82 overtime loss against BYU. It is the first time USD has lost consecutive games this season. The Bulldogs (24-2, 11-0) enter the contest on a 15-game winning streak after defeating Loyola Marymount, 73-60.
 
The game will be broadcast on ESPN with Dave Pasch (play-by-play) and Bill Walton (analyst) on the call. Jack Cronin will have the radio broadcast on Mighty 1090 AM. Live statistics will be available via USDToreros.com.
 
LAST TIME OUT
• A layup by Isaiah Wright with two seconds remaining in regulation sent the game to overtime but San Diego was unable to finish off BYU in the extra period, falling 88-82 this past Thursday night in Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
• The Toreros (16-10, 5-6 WCC) led nearly the entire game and held a 14 point lead with 16:06 to play. However, the Cougars (17-10, 9-3 WCC) reeled off a 20-7 run to cut their deficit to 60-59 with 9:48 to play.
 
• USD struggled down the stretch, committing four turnovers and hitting just three shots from the field over the final 6:30.
 
• BYU took its first lead of the game with 3:50 to play and held a one-point lead, 74-73, with 33 seconds left on the clock. A free throw by Nick Emery with five seconds remaining made the Toreros deficit two points.
 
• Wright received the in-bounds pass, raced the length of the court and converted a layup for the tying basket with two seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.
 
• The Cougars took over in the extra period, connecting on 4-of-5 shots from the field while the Toreros went 0-for-3. USD's only points in the extra period came at the free throw line, hitting 7-of-8 attempts.
 
• It was a tough defeat for the Toreros, which led for 35:18 of the game and shot 52 percent from the field. It was only USD's second loss in 13 home games this season.
 
• Olin Carter III and Isaiah Pineiro led the Toreros with 20 points apiece. Carter III got going early, hitting four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes of the game.
 
• Pineiro added 12 rebounds to his 20 points for his 11th double-double of the season and fifth consecutive. He was second on the team with five assists.
 
• Yauhen Massalski chipped in 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, while Alex Floresca also hit double-digits with 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Tyler Williams went 3-of-5 from behind the arc to add nine points.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. GONZAGA
• USD is 22-72 all-time against the Bulldogs and have dropped the past nine meetings. The Toreros most recent victory against Gonzaga was a 69-66 result on Feb. 22, 2014.
 
• USD has challenged Gonzaga in each of the past three meetings. Isaiah Pineiro tied his career high of 30 points in the first meeting this year in Spokane but it was not enough as the Bulldogs won, 85-69.
 
• The Toreros made it a two-point game twice in the final five minutes in the first contest of the 2017-18 season in Spokane but fell, 69-59. Olin Carter III scored a game-high 21 points.
 
• The Toreros were up by eight points early in the second half and led 58-57 with 4:30 to play during the second meeting of 2017-18 in San Diego but the Toreros could not hold on late and fell, 77-72. Carter III scored 21 points again for USD.
 
NBA REPRESENTATIVES IN ATTENDANCE
• There will be 25 NBA representatives (scouts, general managers, special assistants, etc.) from 19 different teams in attendance for Saturday's game against Gonzaga.
 
• NBA organizations represented include: Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, New Orleans Pelicans, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz.
 
TOREROS AGAINST RANKED TEAMS
• USD has only beaten eight ranked teams in program history. Five of the Toreros ranked wins have come in San Diego, two on neutral courts and one on the road (at No. 14 UCLA, Nov. 26, 2002). USD's last victory against a ranked team was a 69-66 win against No. 22 Gonzaga in San Diego on Feb. 22, 2014.
 
FINALLY HEALTHY
• USD has battled through injuries to starters Yauhen Massalski, Isaiah Wright and Olin Carter III throughout the season.
 
• Massalski missed three games (Dec. 1-9) after sustaining an ankle injury in the first three minutes at Ole Miss (Nov. 28). Wright missed four games (Dec. 29-Jan.5) after a wrist injury during a double-overtime game against Drake (Dec. 23). Carter III missed five games (Jan. 17-Feb. 2) due to an abdominal injury in the second half against Pepperdine (Jan. 12).
 
• USD's game at Loyola Marymount on Feb. 7 was the first time the Toreros had their starting lineup (Wright, Carter III, Tyler Williams, Isaiah Pineiro, Massalski) all start together and finish the game together since Nov. 24 against Jackson State.
 
PINEIRO AND CARTER III LEAD THE WAY
• Isaiah Pineiro has led the Toreros in scoring in 13-of-26 games and Olin Carter III has led USD in seven games. The duo tied for the most points against BYU (Feb. 14) with 20 apiece.
 
• Pineiro is averaging 19.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Pineiro is shooting 51 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3-point range.
 
• Pineiro leads the Toreros with 11 double-doubles on the season and has registered a double-double in each of the past five games. He is averaging 19.2 points and 11.2 rebounds over the past five games.
 
• Pineiro recorded four double-doubles during a five-game span (vs. Grand Canyon, at Santa Clara, vs. Pacific, at Portland) from Jan. 3-18. He averaged 17.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per game during that stretch.
 
• Pineiro ranks among the top-five of WCC players in rebounding (2nd, 9.1), defensive rebounds (2nd, 7.2) and scoring (4th, 19.3).
 
• Carter III missed five games after an injury during the Toreros game against Pepperdine on Jan. 12. He returned to action Feb. 7 at Loyola Marymount and led the Toreros with 15 points in a 65-63 victory.
 
• Carter III is averaging 16.2 points per game and is shooting 47 percent from the field. He has been one of USD's most dangerous shooter from behind the arc, connecting on 36 percent of his 3-point attempts. Carter III is also contributing 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
 
WRIGHT LEADS THE OFFENSE
• Isaiah Wright returned to the lineup against Portland (Jan. 17) after missing four games due to a wrist injury sustained during the Toreros game against Drake (Dec. 23). Wright was excellent in his return, recording 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
 
• Wright started the season well but began gaining steam right before his injury. During a nine-game stretch from Nov.24-Dec. 23, he was shooting 46 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range, and averaging 15.4 points, 5.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals.
 
• Wright is contributing 13.1 points, 5.0 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game on the season.
 
ISAIAHS GO FULL-40
• Isaiah Wright has played at least 40 minutes in five of the past six games. Isaiah Pineiro has played at least 40 minutes in three of the past four. Wright played 43 minutes, while Pineiro played 44 minutes in the overtime game against BYU.
