TEMPE, Ariz. – San Diego concluded play at the Littlewood Classic with a pair of losses on Sunday at Arizona State.
Â
The Toreros (2-9) dropped an 8-0 decision in five innings against Illinois State and fell 12-3 in six innings against No. 14 Arizona State.
Â
It was a tough finish to the weekend for USD, which lost all five games and were run-ruled in four-of-five games.
Â
Despite the results, the Toreros did produce a few bright spots throughout the weekend.
Madison Casiano had an excellent weekend offensively, batting .583 (7-for-12) with two doubles, four RBIs and two walks. She led the Toreros with a .750 slugging percentage.
Â
Sara Silveyra continued her strong start to the season by hitting .417 (5-for-12) with three runs, a double and two RBIs.
Â
Shelbi Evans went .300 (3-for-10) on the weekend with a grand slam.
Â
USD got off to a slow start and could not keep pace with Illinois State's offense. The Redbirds (1-9) struck for three runs in the bottom of the second, and added a run in the third and fourth innings.
Â
The Toreros managed just three hits and left seven runners on base throughout the game. Illinois State secured the run-rule decision with a three-run fifth inning.
Â
USD hung tough with Arizona State (8-2) early and led 2-0 through 2 1/2 innings but were undone by a late surge by the Sun Devils that included a seven-run sixth inning.
Â
Casiano did most of the damage offensively, hammering RBI-doubles to center field in the first and third innings to give USD a 2-0 lead.
Â
The Sun Devils came alive in the third inning and utilized the long ball to take command of the game. Arizona State hit a two-run homer in the third inning and a three-run home run in the fourth inning to take its first lead of the game, 5-2.
Â
Casiano singled up the middle in the top of the fifth inning for her third hit and RBI of the game to pull USD to within 5-3.
Â
However, the Sun Devils rallied for seventh runs in the bottom of the sixth – capped by a grand slam by Maddi Hackbarth – to seal the run-rule decision.
Â
The Toreros will look to get back on track next weekend when they play host to Southern Utah for a three-game series beginning Saturday at noon PT.
