LONG BEACH, Calif.—San Diego completed its second shutout of the season, defeating Long Beach State, 4-0, on Tuesday night at Blair Field.
Freshman
Jake Miller was stellar on the mound in his first career start for the Toreros (4-0). The righthander went 7.0 shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks, with four strikeouts.
San Diego capitalized on three Beach (0-4) errors in the top of the second.
Adam Lopez reached on a fielding error to score
Adam Kerner, and pinch-hitter
Preston Miller scored
Shane McGuire on a ground-out to the shortstop.
Cody Jefferis knocked in two more runs on a single to left field, scoring
Adam Hussain and
Chris Colarossi. Jefferis finished the day 2-for-4, with 2 RBIs.
Jake Miller then retired 13 of 14 batters spanning from the last out of the second inning through the bottom of the sixth.
The Beach threatened to even things up, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but
Travis Kuhn struck out three consecutive batters to shut down the rally and secure the victory for USD.
The Toreros will remain on the road and travel to Tempe, Ariz. to face Arizona State Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. PT.
