SAN DIEGO – A resilient comeback effort by
August Holmgren secured the deciding point as No. 35 San Diego defeated No. 32 Oklahoma State, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.
Â
With the Toreros (7-3) and Cowboys (6-4) tied at 3-3, Holmgren grinded out a tough three-set victory to earn the clinching point for USD.
Â
Holmgren lost the first set against OSU's Matej Vocel, 6-4, but responded by earning a tough, 7-6, (8-6), result in the second set. Holmgren jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the third set but lost the next four games to fall behind 4-3.
Â
Holmgren won the next three games to win the set 6-4 and deliver the Toreros victory.
Â
"I was extremely proud of August for handling that moment the way he did," said head coach
Ryan Keckley. "It's never easy to lose a commanding lead in the third set and find a way to come back. He has put a lot of hours on court crafting his trade, and we were all excited for him to see that hard work pay off today."
Â
The tightly contested win was a welcome result for USD which bounced back after an equally tough result this past Sunday after losing a tough 4-3 decision at Arizona State.
Â
"Great team effort today by this group," said Keckley. "Oklahoma State is a very good team that is exceptionally coached and has done great things on the big stage. We had our back against the wall at pivotal points during this match and managed to continue to scratch and claw. I believe we can attribute that to a few tough 4-3 losses and how we have grown throughout the course of the season as a team."
Â
The Toreros got off to a tough start as OSU dominated doubles play, winning at the No. 1 position, 6-1, and the No. 3 spot, 6-2.
Â
Faced with an early 1-0 hole, the Toreros responded immediately by winning the first two singles matches in straight sets.
Â
Joel Gamerov made quick work on Maxim Tybar (6-3, 6-2) and No. 57
Gui Osorio followed shortly after with a 6-3, 6-0, victory. Gamerov improved to 6-2 in dual match play, while Osorio improved to 7-3.
Â
The Cowboys Emile Hudd defeated
David Norfeldt at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2, to level the score at 2-2.
Â
Nico Borter put the Toreros back up, 3-2, by defeating Luke Hammond at No. 4, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Â
Guus Koevermans pushed his match at No. 6 to a third set but fell to Brady Draheim, 6-4, 6-7 (0-7), 6-2.
Â
Holmgren sealed the final point and victory for the Toreros at No. 1 by defeating Vocel. Holmgren has won each of his past four matches.
Â
The Toreros will look to continue their momentum and remain unbeaten in conference play when they play host to Saint Mary's on Sunday at noon PT.
