Strong Pitching Powers Two Victories

San Diego defeats Weber State and Florida Gulf Coast

SAN DIEGO – Delaney Heller and Madison Earnshaw turned in complete game gems to lead San Diego to a pair of victories on the opening day of the San Diego Classic at the USD Softball complex.

Heller led the Toreros (7-9) to a 4-1 victory against Weber State and Earnshaw guided USD to a 5-1 win against Florida Gulf Coast.

Heller (4-4) limited the Wildcats (3-9) to one run on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts. It was her third complete game of the season.

Earnshaw (3-5) followed with an equally impressive showing, holding the Eagles (7-7) to one run on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. It was her team-leading fourth complete game of the season.

It was a team effort offensively on the day as seven Toreros registered one RBI apiece. Taylor Spence led the Toreros offensively on the day, going 3-for-5 (.600) with two runs, an RBI and a walk in the two games.

The Toreros got off to a quick start against Weber State, producing a run in the second inning and capitalizing on a Wildcats error to add two more and take an early 3-0 lead.

Spence started the bottom of the fifth with a single and was brought home when Sara Silveyra smoked a double to the right-center field gap to put USD up, 4-0.

Weber State managed a run in the top of the seventh on a two-out sacrifice fly but that's all it would get as Heller forced a fly out to center to end the game and seal the victory.

The Toreros picked up where they left off in the second game of the day, producing three runs in the bottom of the first inning an one in the bottom of the second to take an early 4-1 lead.

USD left the bases loaded in three of the first four innings against FGCU. The Toreros added another run in the fourth inning when it loaded the bases and Shelbi Evans drew an RBI-walk.

Earnshaw retired 12 of the final 14 batters to close the game and secure the 5-1 victory.

The Toreros will look to continue their momentum Saturday when they play host to UC Davis at 4:30 p.m.
