Dominating Performance in Quarterfinals Victory

San Diego advances to first WCC Tournament semifinal since 2013

LAS VEGAS – Isaiah Pineiro scored 27 points and San Diego delivered its most dominating performance of the season, defeating BYU 80-57 on Saturday night in the WCC Tournament Quarterfinals at the Orleans Arena.
 
The Toreros (21-13) controlled every aspect of the game to advance to the conference tournament semifinals for the first time since 2013. USD will take on Saint Mary's on Monday at 8:30 p.m. PT. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
 
It was a remarkable effort by USD which opened the game on a 13-0 scoring run, led the entire game and held a BYU team that was averaging 79.7 points to 57. The Toreros held BYU's leading scorers, Yoeli Childs and TJ Haws, to 14 and 10 points, respectively.
 
The Toreros shot 49 percent (25-of-51) on the night, and went 7-of-17 (41 percent) from 3-point range. USD held the Cougars (19-13) to 31 percent shooting on the night, including just one 3-pointer on 17 attempts (6 percent).
 
Pineiro grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with his 27 points. It was his 17th double-double of the season, sixth in the past seven games and 11th in the past 13.
 
Isaiah Wright set the tone early, scoring 11 of his 15 points in the first four minutes of the game. He also chipped in five rebounds and two assists.
 
Finn Sullivan had his best game of the season, producing 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting and grabbed two rebounds in 28 minutes.
 
Massalski and Floresca did an excellent job of shutting down the Cougars leading scorer Childs who managed just 14 points. Massalski also pulled down six rebounds, while Floresca grabbed five.

USD put together its most impressive half of the season to open the contest, jumping out to a 13-point lead in the first four minutes of the game. Wright contributed 11 of those 13 points, opening the game 4-of-4 from the field with three triples.
 
The Cougars cut the deficit to 15-8 on a layup by Mckay Cannon with 11:51 to play in the half but that was as close as they would get the remainder of the game.
 
USD stretched the lead to 20 on a jumper by Pineiro with 6:10 to play in the half. The lead extended to 27 when Joey Calcaterra got a circus-shot layup to fall with 24 seconds remaining in the half.
 
Finn Sullivan converted a layup at the buzzer to give the Toreros a 46-19 lead at halftime.
 
The Toreros 27-point halftime lead was its second largest of the season. USD's 46 points was its second-most in a first half and tied for fifth-most in any half this year.
 
It was more of the same in the second half as the Toreros stretched its lead to 30 on a layup by Massalski with 16:28 to play.
 
USD held its largest lead of the night, 69-25, after Sullivan knocked down a pair of free throws with 11:47 to play.
 
USD began utilizing its bench and resting starters for the remainder of the game. The Toreros got contributions from nearly its entire roster with 14 players logging minutes.
