SAN DIEGO – Madison Earnshaw did not allow an earned run in 10 innings in the circle but it was not enough as San Diego dropped a 4-3 result in 11 innings against Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Earnshaw turned in her second consecutive strong outing of the weekend, pitching the first 10.0 innings and holding the Roadrunners (8-12) to no earned runs on eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts. She did not get much help from her defense, which committed four errors that led to all four CSUB runs.
Â
Heller pitched the final inning for the Toreros (11-15) and did not permit an earned run.
Â
It was a game of missed opportunities offensively for the Toreros which left 13 runners on base. USD left runners stranded in 8-of-11 innings.
Â
One of the Toreros best opportunities to score a deciding run came in the bottom of the sixth with the game tied, 2-2.
Kelli Kufta singled with one out and moved to third on a single to the right-center field gap by
Hailey Freeman in the following at-bat.
Â
Bella Vick stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and hit a line drive to second base that nearly got over the second baseman's head. However, CSUB's second baseman made the catch and threw to third to double-up
Lauren Kane who was pinch running and drifted too far off the bag to end the inning.
Â
USD left two runners stranded in the eighth, ninth and tenth innings.
Â
The Toreros were ultimately undone by their fourth error of the game in the 11th inning.
Â
CSUB loaded the bases with one out. Heller forced a ground ball to Kufta at first base. Kufta fielded the ball cleanly and fired home to get the out at the plate. Toreros catcher
Madison Casiano received the throw and tried to turn a double play by getting the out at first base but threw the ball away allowing the CSUB runner from second to score.
Â
Shelbi Evans drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 11th but a fielder's choice, followed by a double play halted any potential Toreros rally.
Â
USD remains at home next week as it continues a six-game homestand, playing host to UC Santa Barbara beginning on Saturday at noon PT.
