Late Run Comes Up Short

San Diego falls at BYU, 87-73

PROVO, Utah – Isaiah Wright scored 19 points and San Diego mounted a late run but could not complete the comeback, falling at BYU 87-73 on Saturday night at the Marriott Center.

The Toreros (18-13, 7-9 WCC) trailed by double-digits for a majority of the second half but rallied to make it a six-point game with 2:22 to play. That was as close as USD would get, as the Cougars (19-12, 11-5 WCC) hit eight consecutive free throws to end the game and seal the decision.

Wright was excellent throughout the night and contributed seven rebounds and three assists to go along with his team-high 19 points.

Olin Carter III followed with 15 points and Tyler Williams added 11. Isaiah Pineiro battled through a tough night to finish with 10 points and 10 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the season and ninth in the past 10 games.

The Toreros did not have an answer for BYU's offense including Yoeli Childs and TJ Haws who racked up 29 and 26 points, respectively. The Cougars shot 51 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range, while USD went 37 percent from the field and 35 percent from behind the arc.

BYU got hot early and reeled off a 13-2 run to take a 21-10 lead midway through the half. The Cougars led by as many as 14 points but the Toreros chipped away toward the end of the period to make it a single-digit deficit at the break, 41-32.

The Cougars picked up where they left off in the second half, connecting on five of their first six shots to extend their lead to 53-39 with 15:22 to play. The Toreros deficit ballooned to 20 points with 9:57 to play.

The Toreros began to chip away and a pair of free throws by Pineiro with 4:21 brought the deficit back down to single digits, 75-66.

A jumper by Finn Sullivan at 2:22 made it a two-possession game, 79-73.

That was all USD would get the remainder of the night, however, as the Cougars closed on an 8-0 run from the free throw line.

USD resumes play next Thursday at the WCC Tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
