SAN DIEGO – No. 36 San Diego earned its second consecutive sweep and sixth straight victory with a 4-0 win against Memphis on Friday morning at the Hogan Tennis Center.
Â
August Holmgren provided the clinching point for the Toreros (12-3) in the decisive victory, defeating Jan Pallares, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2.
Â
"I was really happy overall with today's match against Memphis," said head coach
Ryan Keckley. "We played with some nerves in doubles but hung around long enough to capitalize on some opportunities. Congrats to Nico and Gui on the top-30 win. That was a solid team for Memphis they defeated."
Â
The Toreros started slow in doubles play but finished strong to win the point and take a 1-0 lead.
Â
Holmgren and
Joel Gamerov dominated in their match at No. 2, beating Pallares and Patrick Sydow, 6-0. However, USD needed comeback efforts on at least one of the other two courts to secure the doubles point.
Â
Gui Osorio and
Nico Borter delivered at No. 1, battling back from a 4-1 deficit to win 7-6 (9-7) against 30th-ranked David Stevenson and Oscar Cutting.
Â
USD took control of the match in singles play, winning the first set in all six matches.
Â
"In singles, we continue to have strong energy from one through six," said Keckley. "We are striking the ball very well and playing within ourselves. We have found a successful identity and are believing in it. We did a great job collecting the first six sets in singles and placing a tremendous amount of pressure on a good Memphis team."
Â
Guus Koevermans doubled the Toreros lead with a 6-0, 6-4, victory at No. 6 against Patrick Sydow.
Â
David Norfeldt earned an identical result at No. 5 with a win against David Stevenson.
Â
Holmgren followed moments after with the deciding point to secure the victory for the Toreros.
Â
"Tomorrow will be a battle against Princeton," said Keckley. "They are well-coached and have a talented group of underclassmen. We look forward to the chance to compete again."
Â
USD will take on No. 50 Princeton on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT at the Hogan Tennis Center.
