SAN DIEGO—San Diego moved to 1-1 in the weekend series against San Francisco after falling 10-4 on Saturday evening at Fowler Park.
The Toreros (16-7, 2-3 WCC) struggled to get going offensively, scoring two runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth. An RBI single by
Adam Kerner in the eighth brought USD within two, 6-4, but the Dons (13-9, 3-2 WCC) put up four runs in the top half of the ninth helped by three USD errors to stall San Diego's momentum and effectively seal the victory.
Kerner finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth—his second of the season.
Shane McGuire went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the fifth and
Ripken Reyes and
Connor Doyle each added a double and a run for USD.
Jake Miller (2-1, 2.32 ERA) got the start for USD, throwing 4 2/3 innings and giving up four runs on three hits, with five walks and five strikeouts. Prior to an RBI groundout by USF in the third inning, Miller had not allowed a run in 24 1/3 innings of work for the Toreros this season.
Five Toreros came out of the bullpen in relief of Miller, collectively giving up six runs (three earned) on eight hits with six walks and four strikeouts.
The Dons did the majority of their damage in the fifth (3 runs) and ninth (4 runs) innings, adding runs in the third, sixth and seventh to even the series, 1-1.
The Toreros remain at Fowler Park for the final game of the series, facing off with the Dons on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT.
