SAN DIEGO – Nico Borter earned a comeback victory to clinch a 4-3 victory for No. 36 San Diego as the Toreros defeated No. 49 Tulane for the San Diego Spring Classic title on Sunday morning.

USD (14-3) has won eight straight matches and 12 of its last 13.

"I am so proud of the way these guys fought this weekend," said head coach
Ryan Keckley. "We stayed the course in each match and refused to let up when things got tough. This Tulane team is very well-coached and extremely competitive. We knew this match was going to be a battle from the beginning."

After dropping the first set at No. 3, Borter battled back to defeat Luis Erlenbusch, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. It is his fifth consecutive victory and he has won six of his past seven matches.

"I was proud of the way Nico stayed with it over the course of this three-and-a-half hour match," said Keckley. "He competed the way I knew he could and put himself in a position to win. He gave himself the opportunity to take the match and stepped up when that time came. He put the team on his shoulders today."

The Toreros got off to a strong start in doubles play as 46th-ranked
August Holmgren and
Joel Gamerov defeated Hamish Steward and Akos Kotorman at No. 2, 6-5. The duo has won five matches in a row and are 5-1 at the No. 2 spot this season.

Gui Osorio clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 1 against Ewan Moore and Tyler Schick. The pair improved to 7-3 when playing in the top position.

Guus Koevermans doubled USD's lead with a decisive 6-2, 6-0, victory at No. 6 against Kotorman. Koevermans has won six straight matches.

Tulane (8-11) earned a victory at No. 4 to cut the Toreros lead to 2-1.

Gui Osorio responded with a 6-4, 6-3, win at No. 2 against Hamish Stewart. Osorio improved to 13-3 in dual match play and is on a team-best seven-match winning-streak.

Tulane hung around with back-to-back wins at No. 1 and No. 5 to level the match at 3-3.

Borter provided the deciding point at No. 3 to secure the win.

"The past few weekends we have really turned a corner competitively," said Keckley. "We are starting to believe in ourselves and each other more than ever. It showed this weekend in a plethora of matches."

The match against Tulane concludes nonconference play for the Toreros, which wrap up the regular season with five straight WCC matches beginning next Saturday at BYU.
