RIVERSIDE, Calif.—San Diego set a new school record for runs scored in a 31-3 victory over UC Riverside on Tuesday afternoon in Riverside, Calif.
The Toreros (9-4) batted around four different times, recording 25 hits and one error, while the USD pitching staff limited UCR to just four hits. The Highlanders (6-7) gave up 13 walks and committed five errors, using nine different pitchers in the contest.
Jeff Houghtby hit 4-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, three runs scored and three RBIs.
Caleb Ricketts and
Cody Jefferis both finished the day 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Ricketts drove in five RBIs and Jefferis added two.
Tora Otsuka finished the day 3-for-6 with two runs scored and four RBIs. In total, seven different Toreros recorded multi-hit games for USD.
Josh Hendrickson got the start for USD, throwing 3.0 innings, giving up two hits with no walks and one strikeout. The Torero bullpen recorded five strikeouts giving up three runs on two hits with four walks in relief of Hendrickson.
Cade Brown (1-0) was credited with the win for USD, coming in during the bottom of the fifth and pitching 1.2 innings with no runs, no hits, no walks and a strikeout.
San Diego scored in every inning but the fifth and eighth, tallying five runs in first, third, fourth and ninth. USD score one run in the second, six in the sixth and four in the seventh on the record-setting day.
The Toreros remain on the road this weekend when they head to the Seattle Baseball Showcase at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Wash. USD will face No. 12/17 Coastal Carolina on Friday, Minnesota on Saturday and Indiana on Sunday—all of which made the NCAA tournament last season. All games are scheduled for 11 a.m. PT.
