SEATTLE—San Diego used a six-run eighth inning to defeat No. 16 Coastal Carolina, 8-5, on Friday afternoon at T-Mobile Park in the opening game of the Seattle Baseball Showcase.
The Toreros (10-4) trailed the Chanticleers (12-3) 5-2 heading into the eighth inning before breaking through to score six runs, behind a bases-loaded triple by
Tora Otsuka. Due to a pre-determined time limit (3.5 hours) the game was called after the conclusion of the eighth inning, with USD on top.
Jeff Houghtby finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while
Shane McGuire went 2-for-4 with one run. Otsuka provided the only multi-base hit for USD with his three-RBI triple and
Ripken Reyes added two RBIs including a sacrifice bunt in the eighth to score Otsuka from third.
Anthony Donatella got the start for the Toreros, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up one run on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Freshman
Noah Owen recorded his first career win, going 1.2 innings, with one unearned run, no hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Jack Dolak was credited with the save—his first for the Toreros—for one inning of work with no runs, no hits and one walk.
CCU scored a run in the third, sixth and seventh innings and two in the fifth to hold the lead for the majority of the contest. San Diego scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings before their breakout six-run eighth.
The Toreros are back in action on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. PT when they face Minnesota in the second game of the Seattle Baseball Showcase.
