LOS ANGELES – Joel Gamerov provided the clinching point in No. 28 San Diego's second straight victory, defeating Loyola Marymount 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Toreros (16-4, 6-1 WCC) have won 10 of their past 11 matches.
"It was a battle today against LMU," said head coach
Ryan Keckley. "It always is when we compete against them, especially on the road. We have had some battles over the past few years and we didn't expect anything else today."
Â
USD got off to a strong start by winning the doubles point.
August Holmgren and
Joel Gamerov, ranked 56th nationally, defeated Lukas Moenter and Thien Nguyen 6-2 at No. 1.
Â
The Lions (6-13, 4-3 WCC) won at No. 3 to level the match but
Gui Osorio and
Nico Borter pulled out a 7-5 win at No. 2 to secure the point for the Toreros. Osorio and Borter improved to 12-6 in dual match play this season.
"We came out and took the doubles point on one and two," said Keckley. "Those two teams have been a rock for us this year. We made some adjustments and in crunch time executed well."
Â
Osorio, ranked 57th nationally in singles, doubled USD's lead by defeating Nick Borchenko, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2. He has won a team-best 10 straight matches.
"Gui continues to be a competitive nightmare for his opponents," said Keckley. "He is playing some inspired tennis this season."
Â
LMU got on the board with a win at No. 6 to cut USD's lead to 2-1.
Â
David Norfeldt got the Toreros back on track with a win at No. 5, defeating Max Kaiser, 6-4, 7-6. Norfeldt improved to 10-4 in dual match play.
Â
Gamerov provided the final blow with a victory at No. 4 against Lucas Moreno. Gamerov has won three consecutive matches.
"Joel stormed back after dropping the first set in a breaker," said Keckley. "He upped his competitiveness and focus and ultimately clinched the match for his team. We love to see the junior respond in this fashion and put the team on his back in these kind of moments."
Â
The Toreros will have a quick turnaround for their next match as they head to Pepperdine on Sunday at 1 p.m.
