SAN DIEGO—San Diego fought off a late comeback from Loyola Marymount to take the series finale 11-8 on Sunday afternoon at Page Stadium.
After solo home runs from
Chris Colarossi and
Adam Kerner in the third and fourth innings, the Toreros (22-14, 7-8 WCC) piled on six runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-0 lead. USD held a 9-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh before the Lions (22-13, 11-4 WCC) came storming back, putting up seven runs in the seventh to make it a one-run game.
In the top of the eighth,
Cody Jefferis gave the Toreros some breathing room, scoring from third on a wild pitch and Kerner added an insurance run in the ninth with a two-out solo home run—his second of the game—to make it 11-8, USD.
The Lions threatened in the bottom of the ninth, with runners on first and second with no outs.
Travis Kuhn took over on the mound for USD and retired three Lions in a row with two strikeouts and a foul-out to third to clinch the victory for the Toreros and earn his second save of the season.
Anthony Donatella (2-0, 3.66 ERA) was credited with the win in his third start of the season, pitching 5.2 solid innings and giving up just one run on three hits and four walks, striking out two.
Kerner paced the Toreros offensively, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs, two coming from his solo home runs and the third coming from an RBI single to start the barrage of scoring in the sixth inning.
Ripken Reyes also had a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-5 with two runs and Colarossi went 1-for-3 with two RBIs including his third inning home run.
The Toreros will travel to face California Baptist for a mid-week matchup on Tuesday before hosting Portland for a three-game series at Fowler Park Thursday through Saturday.
