RIVERSIDE, Calif.—San Diego held off a late comeback to secure a 5-4 victory over California Baptist on Tuesday evening at Totman Stadium.
After the Toreros (23-14) tied the game 4-4 in the top of the fifth, the USD bullpen pitched five shutout innings including four strikeouts to hold off the Lancers (23-13) offense down the stretch. San Diego capitalized on a CBU fielding error to score the go-ahead run in the sixth and secure the eventual victory for the Toreros.
Cade Brown got the start for USD, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up four runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. The Torero bullpen was strong in relief of Brown, collectively allowing just four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Jack Dolak (4-3) was credited with the win and
Louie Crow earned his first save of the season for USD.
The Toreros got things going in the second, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs.
Paul Kunst and
Cody Jefferis hit back-to-back sacrifice flyouts to put USD on top 2-0.
The Lancers answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to cut the lead in half. CBU added three more runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead, 4-2.
After putting runners on the corners,
Tora Otsuka and
Ripken Reyes hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game 4-4, before retaking the lead one inning later.
CBU threatened a comeback in the bottom of the ninth after advancing runners to second and third with two outs, but a groundout to
Shane McGuire at first base ended the rally and secured the win for USD.
USD collected seven hits in the contest including two for Otsuka who finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. McCready registered the only extra-base hit for USD with a double in the sixth inning, finishing with a run and stolen base as well.
The Toreros return to Fowler Park for a three-game series with Portland beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. PT.
