Toreros Grind Out Victory at Pepperdine

San Diego defeats Pepperdine in final road match, 4-2

SAN DIEGO – David Norfeldt earned a comeback win to seal a gritty 4-2 victory for No. 28 San Diego on Sunday afternoon at Pepperdine.

Norfeldt dropped his first set, 6-3, but stormed back to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-0, to seal the Toreros (17-4, 7-1 WCC) third straight victory and 11th in their past 12 matches.

"Today was a battle," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "It always is when we play Pepperdine. The rivalry is fantastic and it is always a match we circle, highlight and bold at the beginning of the year."

USD got off to a strong start in doubles play, earning decisive wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren, ranked 56th nationally, defeated Adrian Oeztbach and Tim Zeitvogel at No. 1, 6-2.

Gui Osorio and Nico Borter secured the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 2 against Enrique Luque Rico and Corrado Summaria. Osorio and Borter won their third straight match to improve to 13-6 in dual matches and 6-1 in WCC play.

"We came out firing on all cylinders in doubles," said Keckley. "We came up big in some early moments and never looked back. I was proud of the energy and fight we showed to clinch the first point. We didn't have the same fire during the singles play. It was a very up and down performance for us. Give Pepperdine all the credit for making us uncomfortable in their environment. I was proud of the boys for finding a way to win."

Noah Dufort doubled the Toreros lead in singles with a 6-1, 6-2, victory at No. 6 against Scotland Garapedian.

The Waves (10-11, 4-3 WCC) got on the board with a win at No. 3.

Osorio, ranked 57th nationally, responded shortly after with a 6-3, 6-1, victory at No. 2 against Summaria to put USD up, 3-1. Osorio has won 11 straight matches and improved to 17-3 in dual matches.

Pepperdine picked up a second point with a win at No. 4 to pull back within one, 3-2.

Norfeldt ensured the Toreros final regular season road match ended in victory with the clinching result at No. 5. He improved to 5-0 in WCC play and has won four consecutive matches.

"We will get back to the fundamentals this week and prepare for the our last home match of the year," said Keckley.

USD will look to continue its momentum as it concludes the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT against Pacific.
