SAN DIEGO – No. 30 San Diego clinched its second straight regular-season championship and fifth in the past six years with a dominating 4-0 victory against Pacific on Saturday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.
Â
The Toreros (18-4, 8-1 WCC) won the doubles point then reeled off three straight singles victory to secure their sixth sweep of the season. It was a sweet end to the regular season for the Toreros, which honored senior
Pratt Keerasuntonpong before the match.
Â
"Pratt has been an integral part of USD's success during his time in San Diego," said head coach
Ryan Keckley. "Since his first day at the courts, he has strived to lead by example. Each day after, he has put the team in front of himself and never asked for anything in return. It has been a pleasure to watch him develop and grow as a scholar-athlete during his four years as a Torero."
Â
USD earned the No. 1 seed for next week's WCC Tournament where it will pursue its sixth straight tournament title.
Â
"What a way to finish out the regular season," said Keckley. "To go undefeated at home and take the WCC regular season is a testament to this group and the daily commitment they make to each other. I am so proud of this team for the way they continue to find a way to get it done. It hasn't always been the prettiest, and we haven't always been at our best, but we stayed the path and stuck together over the course of this season."
Â
The Toreros got off to a strong start with
August Holmgren and
Joel Gamerov, ranked 62nd nationally, won their match at No. 1, 6-4. The duo improved to 9-4 in dual matches and 4-1 in WCC play.
Â
The Tigers (6-16, 3-6 WCC) leveled the match with a win at No. 3 but USD secured the point moments later as
Gui Osorio and
Nico Borter won at No. 2, 6-4. It was the fourth consecutive victory for Osorio and Borter.
Â
Osorio, ranked 55th nationally, quickly doubled the Toreros lead with a convincing 6-0, 6-3, victory at No. 2 against Philip Hjorth. Osorio has won 13 straight matches and capped a perfect WCC season with a 9-0 record. He is 18-3 in dual matches and 24-6 overall.
Â
Gamerov led nearly his entire match and put the Toreros up, 3-0, with a 6-3, 6-3, victory at No. 4 against Akram El Sallaly. Gamerov improved to 7-2 when playing in the No. 4 spot.
Â
Garrett Kurtz was inserted into the Toreros lineup after the doubles point and made the most of it by providing the clinching point for USD. Kurtz defeated Nathan Hampton at No. 6, 6-4, 6-3, to seal the 4-0 win. Kurtz improved to 3-0 in WCC play this season.
Â
"We will get back to work this coming week and set our attention on WCC tournament play," said Keckley.
Â
USD earned the No. 1 seed in the WCC Tournament and earned a by straight to the semifinals. The Toreros will play on Friday at 1:30 p.m. PT against either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed.
