SAN DIEGO—San Diego fell to San Diego State 4-2 on Tuesday evening at Fowler Park to split the season series 1-1.
The Toreros (25-16) held a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth inning before SDSU (25-17) tied the game, scoring on a wild pitch. The teams stayed locked at 2-2 until the Aztecs broke through, scoring two runs in the eighth inning to secure the victory.
SDSU struck first with a solo home run in the top of the second, but USD answered in the bottom of the inning with a bases-loaded single by
Chris McCready to tie the game 1-1.
San Diego took the lead an inning later when
Jeff Houghtby sent a 3-1 pitch to the wall in right field for an RBI double to score
Shane McGuire from first.
After the Aztecs tied things up for the second time, it appeared the game was headed for extra innings. With the bases loaded SDSU sent an RBI single through the middle of the infield. Houghtby made a play to stop the ball but a throwing error allowed a second run to score, securing the 4-2 lead for the Aztecs.
Josh Hendrickson got the start for USD, pitching three innings and holding the Aztecs to one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Five Toreros came out of the bullpen in relief of Hendrickson, collectively giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Jake Miller (2-4) was credited with the loss, after allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.
Houghtby paced the Toreros offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while
Paul Kunst went 2-for-4.
The Toreros remain home to host Hawaii on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before traveling to Saint Mary's for a weekend series.
