SAN DIEGO – San Diego was undone by a five-run fifth inning as the Toreros dropped a 7-1 decision in the series finale at BYU on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Toreros (19- 24, 3-6 WCC) limited the Cougars (24-10, 8-1 WCC) to just two runs through the first two innings but could not contain their offense in the fifth inning.
Â
BYU reeled off five runs on five hits in the fifth to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Â
The Toreros got a run back in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by
Sophia Bjerk. That was all USD would get, however, as the Cougars retired the next five Toreros batters to seal the victory.
Â
Madison Earnshaw (5-10) got the start in the circle and lasted 4 1/3 innings before being relieved by
Halle Kyler.
Â
USD will look to get back on track as it returns home next weekend for its final home series of the season, playing host to Santa Clara on Saturday and Sunday.
