SAN DIEGO—San Diego dropped the series finale with BYU, 17-4 on Saturday afternoon at Fowler Park but took the series, 2-1.
The Cougars (22-8, 8-4 WCC) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after a 2-RBI double in the first and a grand slam in the second. The Toreros (21-11, 6-6 WCC) got on the board in the third when
Shane McGuire hit a grounder to first to score
Tora Otsuka from third base to make it 6-1.
BYU extended its lead with runs in the fourth (3), fifth (5) and sixth to make it 15-1 before the Toreros could answer.
Jeff Houghtby sent a 2-RBI single to right field in the sixth and
