Seniors Shine in Comeback Victory

McCready, Reyes, Houghtby, Collard drive in all four runs on their senior day

SAN DIEGO—San Diego rallied in the eighth inning to defeat Pacific, 4-2, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Fowler Park.

On a day dedicated to the seniors, they delivered—driving in all four of the Toreros' runs to overtake the Tigers (22-24, 9-15 WCC) and take the series 2-1.

USD (31-21, 14-13 WCC) fell behind early after Pacific put up two runs in the fourth inning. UOP maintained a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the Toreros began to rally.

Adam Kerner got things going with a double down the left field line before Tora Otsuka drew a four pitch walk to put two men on. With two outs, Chris McCready sent a line drive to center field, just out of reach of the diving Pacific shortstop—scoring Kerner easily from third.

One inning later, Ripken Reyes sent a towering shot over the right field wall to tie the game at 2-2. Jeff Houghtby followed with a line drive homer over the wall in right-center field to put the Toreros in front 3-2.

Kerner doubled for the second straight inning, bringing Kevin Collard to the plate to pinch hit. The senior sent a line drive sailing down the left field line to score Kerner from second and cushion the USD lead.

Reyes and Houghtby each went 2-for-4 a run, home run and RBI, while Kerner finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs for USD.

Senior Anthony Donatella got the start for USD, pitching two shutout innings and allowing two hits with no walks and one strikeout.

Travis Kuhn (3-3) was credited with the win after coming on in the sixth inning. Kuhn inherited two runners on base but an excellent defensive play at the plate kept UOP from extending its lead.

It looked as if Pacific would make it 3-0 after a single to left field, but Max Jung-Goldberg sent a blazing throw to Kerner at home plate, who made a quick catch-and-tag to retire the side. Kuhn then went to work, limiting Pacific to two hits and one walk with four strikeouts down the stretch to hold off the Tigers for the victory.

San Diego will conclude the regular season at Fowler Park on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against California Baptist.
