SANTA CLARA, Calif.—San Diego used a potent offense and a dominant performance by
Anthony Donatella to take game one over Santa Clara, 14-6, on Friday evening.
After the Toreros (27-19, 11-11 WCC) put up four runs in the top of the first, the Broncos (10-33, 3-16 WCC) answered scoring six runs in the bottom of the inning. Donatella came on in relief of starter
Grady Miller and shut out SCU through 8.2 innings of work.
The Toreros reclaimed the lead after posting three runs in the top of the fourth and added insurance runs in the fifth (2), seventh (1) and ninth (4) innings to secure the victory in the series opener.
Donatella (3-1) dealt seven strikeouts and allowed just two walks to earn the victory for USD. The senior lefthander retired 13 of the first 14 batters faced and held the Broncos to six hits in the contest.
San Diego's offense did its job to take the pressure off Donatella, collecting 15 hits in the contest.
Four Toreros finished with multi-hit games including
Jeff Houghtby and
Stephen Dubb who both finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs for USD.
Shane McGuire went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and
Paul Kunst finished 2-for-5 including a double in the ninth, with two RBIs and two runs.
USD is back in action against the Broncos for game two on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. PT.
