SAN DIEGO – San Diego will begin a five-game road stretch on Friday with a matchup against cross-town rival San Diego State before taking on CSUN on Sunday. The Toreros look to continue momentum after a 1-0 win against Cal Poly.
SCOUTING THE AZTECS
San Diego (3-2-0) will take on the Aztecs (1-3-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. (PT) at the SDSU Sports Deck. San Diego State leads the all-time record against the Toreros at 7-9-1. Each team holds home field advantage in the series.
The cross-town rivals are meeting for the 18th time after San Diego defeated the Aztecs, 5-2, in 2018 with goals by four different Toreros. USD has scored 28 goals all-time against the Aztecs.
SDSU is coming off of a 1-1 tie against Miami in Coral Gables where Kiera Utush found the back of the net in the 44th minute off of a penalty kick. The Hurricanes scored the equalizer with six minutes remaining in regulation. Neither team attempted a shot in the first overtime, and Miami had three chances in the final overtime period but couldn't connect.
The Aztecs were outshot 19 to 11, including eight to three shots on goal.
Utush and Chloe Frisch are the only two players who have scored for the Aztecs so far in 2019. The midfielders have started all five games for SDSU and have recorded 10 and eight shots respectively.
SCOUTING THE MATADORS
The Toreros will then travel to face CSUN on Sunday at 1 p.m. (PT). The Matadors are 4-1-1 on the season and will face CSU Bakersfield at home Friday night before facing the Toreros on Sunday.
This will be the first meeting since 2017, as San Diego holds advantage in the all-time record at 10-4-1. The Toreros are 3-3-0 on the road against the Matadors and will travel to Northridge for the second consecutive time. The Toreros have outscored CSUN 26 to 11 in 15 matchups.
The Matadors are off to their best start since 2015 with four wins in their first six matches. CSUN is coming off of a 1-0 victory against Eastern Washington and a 0-0 double-overtime draw with Big-12 opponent Kansas State. Bethany Fitzsimmons scored the lone goal against Eastern Washington in the first period off of a penalty kick.
Five different players have scored for the Matadors in 2019. Goalkeepers Amanda Delgado and Taylor Thames have split time in goal, both recording over 10 saves on the season.
