SAN DIEGO – Milan Moses scored her fourth goal of the season to give the Toreros a 1-0 victory over cross-town rival San Diego State. This marks first time San Diego (4-2-0) has defeated the Aztecs (1-4-1) on the road in series history.
Moses, the SDSU transfer, broke through in the 78th minute with a shot inside the right post off an assist from
Halle Walls and
Mina Ghazizadeh. The redshirt senior recorded five shot attempts on the night with one on goal.
"She's just a fighter," said head coach
Louise Lieberman. "For her to grind it out and to get the winning goal, I mean kudos to her. I'm proud she gets to walk away with that."
The second half proved to be a battle as the Toreros were only outshot five to four in the period. San Diego dominated the last quarter of the match, getting four shots off in the final 20 minutes.
The first 45 ended scoreless as both teams fought to maintain possession beyond the midfield.
Bekah Valdez was the only other Torero to have multiple shot attempts on the night as the freshman missed just shy with a rocket to the cross bar in the 35th minute for her lone shot on goal.
San Diego's defense was led by
Michaela Foster, who was a force in the backfield stopping multiple Aztec advances. The sophomore was efficient on the breakaway with multiple blocks on shot attempts.
"It's her grit, her mentality, and her passion for wanting to do her job to the best of her ability," said Lieberman. "It's consistent with her, and to do what she does consistently is an elite level player."
Amber Michel continued to be solid in goal for the Toreros, earning her second shutout of the season. Michel collected six saves against the Aztecs, her second highest total so far in 2019.
Up next, San Diego will travel to Northridge, Calif. to face CSUN on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. (PT).
