Osorio Bounces Back, Advances to Consolation Semis

Senior aims to salvage a consolation final appearance at the Battle in the Bay

SAN FRANCISCO/MILWAUKEE – Four wins, highlighted by Gui Osorio's two wins in singles, highlighted day two of action for the San Diego men's tennis team in the Battle in the Bay and Milwaukee Tennis Classic tournaments on Saturday.

Osorio, a day after being eliminated from the main draw in his tournament-opening match, picked up two singles win in the consolation bracket at the Battle in the Bay at the California Tennis Club to move into the semifinals. The senior took down Texas Tech's Bjorn Thomson 6-1, 6-3 to start his day and then went on to beat Christian Lerby of Arizona State 6-1, 6-4.

He will face Mason Beiler of Oklahoma on Sunday at 10 a.m. with an opportunity to compete in the consolation bracket final on the line later in the day.

"I am proud of Gui for getting back after it after a disappointing outcome yesterday," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "He bounced back and competed in a way that has given him a lot of success over the years. I'm excited for his opportunity tomorrow."

In addition to his singles success, Osorio paired up with freshman Sacchitt Sharrma to take down Stanford's Timothy Sah and Sangeet Sridhar in doubles, 8-6, in an extra match outside of any bracket.

Sharrma went 1-1 in singles on Saturday, defeating Kent Hunter of Cal 3-6, 6-3 (10-8) and losing in hard-fought fashion against William Genesen of Stanford 7-5, 6-4. The win over Hunter was Sharrma's first collegiate career singles win.

Despite winning the opening set in the Round of 32, Joel Gamerov was eliminated from the Milwaukee Tennis Classic main draw after he fell to Kentucky's Gabriel Diallo 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Also in the Milwaukee tournament, freshman Marvin Schaber saw his experience come to an end as he lost to Bill Duo of Princeton 6-1, 6-1.

"It was another up and down day for this group, but that's the Fall for you," added Keckley. "Our goal this semester is to establish the identity of each individual player and continue to improve on our weaknesses during competition. Today, we were not physical enough in two of our matches which was the difference between a W and an L. We need to get back into the gym and focus on our fitness moving forward."

If Osorio advances to the consolation bracket final at the Battle in the Bay, it will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
