San Diego Continues Hot Start with 3-0 Win

The Toreros improved to 4-0, its best start since 2002

SAN DIEGO – A pair of goals by Miguel Berry and two crucial first-half saves by Matt Wiher guided San Diego to a 3-0 win over Belmont on Sunday at Torero Stadium, its fourth straight victory to start the season.

USD (4-0-0), in the midst of its longest winning streak in four years, battled through a scoreless first half, due in part to Wiher's saves in the 37th and 42nd minutes. Belmont (0-3-1) was able to find holes in the backline of the Toreros, but the final line of defense in Wiher prevented any goals. The redshirt sophomore's biggest stop was a kick save to stop a one-on-one chance by the Bruin attacker with three minutes remaining in the half.

"I am really pleased with (Wiher)," said USD head coach Brian Quinn. "What's more important is he hasn't had a lot of action, but when he was called upon, he had two huge saves in the first half."

It was Wiher's third straight shutout, a first for a USD goalie since Thomas Olsen had three in a row in 2017.

The shutout also helped extend USD's best start to a campaign in the last 17 years (5-0 in 2002).

It did not take much time for the Toreros to break the scoreless game in the second half as Berry directed a pass from Chase Van Wey inside the goal area to make it 1-0 in the 51st minute.

Berry later scored his second goal in the 85th when he worked around the Belmont goalkeeper Cameron Petty in a one-on-one before tapping it into an empty net. Berry broke through the backline after a well-crafted pass from Ross Meldrum found the empty area.

Jacob Planell had the final goal of the day on a header from a free kick. Berry kicked the ball from the right side of the penalty area, and after a bounce, Planell put it past Petty to give USD a 3-0 lead with only two minutes left in the game.

"When you play two games in 48 hours, you have to keep encouraging the guys, make sure their habits are good, find chances, and keep their discipline defensively," said Quinn. "The game was really in balance until the last five minutes, but I'm pleased with the entire team's effort."

Berry finished the day with five points, giving him a team-best 11 this season. The two goals also moved him into seventh on USD's all-time list for most career goals (25).

The Toreros will stay at home for their next two games, the first of which is on Friday at 7 p.m. against UC Davis.
