USD is coming off its first WCC win and a midweek bye

SAN DIEGO Entering the weekend coming off a Thursday bye and its first conference win of the season, San Diego returns to the court on Saturday when it hosts Santa Clara in the Jenny Craig Pavilion at 3 p.m.

USD, which won at Portland by 10 points last weekend, will face Santa Clara for the second time this season. The two met three weeks ago in Santa Clara, a game in which the Toreros lost 80-63. 

The Toreros are winless in two tries at home this conference season while the Broncos have lost two of their three WCC road games.

Saturday's game can be watched on the WCC Network, with the Voice of the Toreros Jack Cronin on the call.

LAST TIME OUT: USD NOTCHES FIRST WCC WIN OF THE YEAR
- Jared Rodriguez scored 17 points, Joey Calcaterra had 16 and Yauhen Massalski tied his career-high in rebounds with 14 as San Diego earned its first conference win of the season by topping Portland 77-67 on Saturday at the Chiles Center. USD snapped its five-game losing streak by turning in a dominant second half on the glass and shooting 57%. The Toreros, who were outrebounded 22-14 in the first half by the Pilots (9-11, 1-4 WCC), grabbed 24 boards and were led by Massalski's 11. Of the 24 second-half rebounds by USD, 17 were on the defensive end. It was also +10 in the rebounding battle. Three Toreros had 11 points each in the second, including Rodriguez, Calcaterra and Braun Hartfield. USD made a 22 percentage point improvement in its field-goal shooting between the first and second half, helping it score 70+ points for the third game in a row – a season-first. Rodriguez and Calcaterra combined to go 13-of-24 from the field and 6-of-9 from beyond the arc to score their 33 points. 

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST SANTA CLARA
- Saturday will be the 88th all-time meeting between USD and Santa Clara. The Toreros trail in the series, 38-49.

- The Toreros and Broncos have split the last six games, but USD has lost six of the last nine.

- USD is 19-21 against Santa Clara at home. The Toreros won the last meeting inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a 66-58 victory on January 25, 2018. Santa Clara has won four of the last six meetings in San Diego, though.

- USD head coach Sam Scholl, a former assistant and associate head coach for the Broncos, is 1-2 all-time against Santa Clara in his head coaching career.

LOOKING AHEAD
- The Toreros stay at home to play their only game of the season against San Francisco. USD and the Dons face off on Thursday, January 30 at 7 p.m.

BRAUN, THE TOP SCORER
- Braun Hartfield, the team's leading scorer this season, scored 13 points at Portland last Saturday, giving him 10+ points in three straight games, five of the six WCC contests this year, and 13 of the last 14 games overall.

- In the last seven games, Hartfield is averaging 15.1 points on 41.0% shooting (34-of-83), 4.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He is also shooting 45.2% (19-of-42) from three-point range and 76% (19-of-25) from the charity stripe.

- In the last three contests, Hartfield is 16-of-18 (88.9%) from the free throw line and averaging 17 points and 4.7 rebounds.

- Hartfield has three 20-point games this season, including two in the last seven games. He trails Joey Calcaterra (4) for the most 20-point efforts by a Torero this year.

- He enters the week 13th in the WCC in scoring for the overall season and 10th in rebounding.

JOEY BACK IN HIS ZONE
- Joey Calcaterra has 13 and 16 points, respectively, in the last two games - giving him double-digit scoring efforts in four of the six conference games this year. Last season as a redshirt freshman, Calcaterra had two WCC games of 10 or more points.

- Calcaterra is 4-of-8 from three-point range in the last two games and USD's leading three-point shooter (44.8%) in conference-only contests. He is seventh in the WCC with that mark.

- For the season, Calcaterra has taken the most three-point attempts by a Torero (104) while he is second on the team in long distance shooting (37.5%).

FROM DOWNTOWN
- With the help of Joey Calcaterra's 44.8% three-point shooting, the Toreros are third in WCC-only games in team three-point percentage (37.7%). USD averages 21.7 three-point attempts per conference game, the second-highest in the WCC entering the week (San Francisco, 25.0).

- The Toreros average 8.2 three-pointers made per game in WCC action, which is third-best (Leader: BYU, 9.2).

THE 45 MARK
- USD has shot 45.5% from three-point range in each of the last two games, making it the first time since December 7-11, 2016 it has back-to-back games of 45% or better from long distance.

- The Toreros also have 10 three-pointers made in the last two games, making it the first time since March 2018 they had double-digit three-pointers made in consecutive games. In 2018, they turned the feat in three straight contests.

FINN HEATING UP
- Finn Sullivan has 10+ points in three straight games, a career-first for the sophomore. He had a career-high 25 against Pepperdine on January 11 and then followed up with 13 at BYU and 10 at Portland.

- In the last three games, Sullivan is averaging 16.0 points on 53.8% shooting (14-of-26). He also has 3.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals.

- After going two games without a three-pointer made, Sullivan is 8-of-18 (44.4%) from long range in the last four.

J-ROD'S BREAKOUT GAME
- Jared Rodriguez gave USD 17 points in 19 minutes off the bench in last Saturday's win at Portland. He tied his career-high for field goals made (7) and set a new one in three-pointers made (3).

- It was Rodriguez's fourth double-digit scoring effort of the season and first since December 2, 2019 vs. UIC in Boca Raton, Florida. It was also his third 10-point, 5-rebound game of the year.

OFFENSIVE OUTBURST
- After only scoring more than 60 once in the first three WCC games, the Toreros have scored 70+ in the last three. It is the first time they have scored 70+ points in three consecutive games since January 5-17, 2019.

- The Toreros have not scored 70+ points in four straight games since November 15-December 9, 2018 (7 games). USD has not scored 70+ points in four consecutive conference games in a single season since the 2011-12 campaign (6 games).

- The Toreros have turned in eight games this season with 70+ points (4-4 record).

WITH THE ASSIST
- Marion Humphrey has a 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio in the last seven games, turning in 24 assists against nine turnovers.

- Humphrey has 3+ assists and no turnovers in two of his last three games. He has done that three times in the last seven games and is something he did not do in his first 14 career games.

- Humphrey enters the week T-11th in the WCC in assists in conference-only games (2.8).

TEAM REBOUNDS
- The Toreros, who are fourth in the WCC in total rebounds, have won the rebounding battle in the last three games and eight times in the last 12 contests. USD is 6-4 this season when it outrebounds its opponent.
