SAN DIEGO – After two road games to start its conference schedule, San Diego returns to the Jenny Craig Pavilion for its first WCC home game of the season when it hosts No. 1 Gonzaga on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Toreros, who are 0-2 to start the conference season, host the nation's top-ranked team for the third time in program history and second time against a No. 1 Gonzaga team.
Thursday's game can be watched on the WCC Network, with the Voice of the Toreros Jack Cronin on the call.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST GONZAGA
- Thursday will be the 95th all-time meeting between USD and Gonzaga, with the Toreros trailing in the series, 21-73.
- The Toreros have lost 10 straight to Gonzaga. Their last win against the Bulldogs was on February 22, 2014 (W, 69-66 at home).
- USD is 2-26 all-time against Gonzaga when the Bulldogs are ranked in the AP Top 25. Thursday is the second time Gonzaga is ranked No. 1 in the country against the Toreros (Last: Feb. 23, 2017 at home).
- Of the Toreros' 21 all-time wins against Gonzaga, 11 are at home (11-29).
LOOKING AHEAD
- The Toreros continue their two-game homestand with a matchup against Pepperdine on Saturday at 7 p.m. USD lost the season series a year ago (0-2) but swept the season series in 2017-18.
AGAINST NO. 1
- The Toreros are 0-2 all-time against a team ranked No. 1 in the AP poll. The last time USD faced a No. 1 team was three years ago during the 2016-17 season when USD lost 96-38 to Gonzaga on February 23, 2017 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
- Both times USD has faced a No. 1 team have been in San Diego. The Toreros played Kansas in 1995 at the San Diego Sports Arena.

- Of the 67 top-25 matchups in USD's history, 28 are against a ranked Gonzaga team. The Toreros are 2-26 when the Zags are ranked.
- The Toreros are 0-11 all-time against top-5 teams.
- USD's highest ranked win in program history was at No. 14 UCLA on November 26, 2002 (W, 86-81). The Toreros' highest ranked win in a true home game was against No. 20 Saint Mary's on January 28, 2008 (W, 63-55). USD did beat No. 20 Gonzaga at Jenny Craig Pavilion in the WCC Tournament on March 10, 2008.
- USD's last ranked win was on February 22, 2014 against No. 25 Gonzaga at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros have lost 16 consecutive games against ranked teams (6 straight at home).
HUMPHREY'S HELPERS
- Marion Humphrey has become the Toreros' key distributor as the redshirt freshman point guard is averaging 5.0 assists and a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio over the last three games. He has 15 assists and five turnovers total over the stretch.
- Humphrey is averaging 2.4 assists per game this season. He is second on the team in total assists with 41 (Leader: Joey Calcaterra, 43).
- Humphrey had seven assists and no turnovers against Whittier on December 29, making it only the fourth time in the last 10 seasons a Torero had seven-plus assists and no turnovers (source: Sports Reference). It was the first time since
Isaiah Wright had eight assists and no turnovers against Weber State in last year's season opener on November 6, 2018.
- In addition to Humphrey and Wright, Christopher Anderson also turned in the feat for USD, once in 2013-14 (vs. San Diego Christian) and then in 2014-15 (vs. Boise State).
- Meanwhile, over the last four games, Humphrey is averaging 9.5 points (13-of-34 FG), 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds.
JAMES THE SCORER
- James Jean-Marie has turned in back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts in his first career games in the WCC. The Navarro College transfer had 11 points against LMU in the conference opener followed by 14 at Santa Clara in his first career WCC start.
- Jean-Marie is shooting 60% (9-of-15) from the field in the last two games. He also has 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
- While he is only 2-of-6 from three-point range in the last two, the junior is the team's leading three-pointer shooter this season with a 42.3% clip (11-of-26). He only averages 1.5 attempts per game this year but has at least two attempts in the last two contests.
FROM LONG DISTANCE
- USD is coming off high-water marks in three-pointers in the last two games. At LMU on January 2, USD had a season-high 28 three-point attempts, its most since March 2, 2019 at BYU (29). In the last game at Santa Clara on January 4, the Toreros had 11 three-pointers made, their most since February 21, 2019 vs. Portland (11).
- The Toreros shot 50% (11-of-22) from three-point range against the Broncos, their best long-range performance since December 15, 2018 vs. Northern Colorado (57.1%, 8-of-14). It was also their highest three-point shooting percentage in a game with 20 or more attempts since January 14, 2017 vs. BYU (12-of-21, 57.1%).
- USD is 19-of-50 (38%) from three-point range in conference-play this year and 118-of-369 (32%) in all games.
OPPOSING THREES
- USD is third in the WCC and 64th in the country in three-point defense, allowing opponents to shoot 29.7% from downtown.
- The Toreros held LMU to 13.6% from beyond the arc in their conference opener. It was the lowest three-point shooting percentage allowed by the Toreros since March 9, 2019 at BYU (5.9%).
- USD has held 10 of its 17 opponents to 30% or less in three-point shooting this season.
BRAUN BRAUN
- Braun Hartfield has become the go-to offensive threat for the Toreros as the Cleveland, Ohio native is averaging 15.6 points on 49.2% shooting (60-of-122) in the last 10 games. He has scored in double-digits in 10 straight.
- In addition to averaging 15.6 points, Hartfield is averaging 6.2 rebounds (62 total) in the last 10 - which is second on the team (leader: Massalski, 6.4/game).
- In the first seven games, Hartfield averaged 9.4 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 37.3%, meaning he has improved his scoring six points points per game while improved his shooting nearly 12 percentage points.
- Hartfield is the first Torero this season to have 10+ points in 10 straight games. Last year, Isaiah Pineiro had double-digit points in 35 consecutive games to start the year.
SEASON-LOW SHOT ATTEMPTS
- USD attempted a season-low 47 field goals at Santa Clara last Saturday, its fewest in a game since January 26, 2019 vs. San Francisco (46). Entering last Saturday, the Toreros averaged 58 attempts per game (currently: 57.5).
START TO THE WCC SEASON
- The Toreros are 0-2 to start their conference schedule and trying to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2016-17. Last season, USD began the WCC season 1-2.
BLOCK BY BLOCK
- Yauhen Massalski currently ranks fifth in program history with 106 career blocks. He is only the fifth Torero to have 100+ blocks in a career, and he has 40+ blocks in each of his first two seasons at USD. He enters the game against Santa Clara on pace for 39 blocks this year in the regular season.
- The Belarus native has a block in seven of his eight games this year. He has at least one block in 53 career games, which are the third-most since 2010-11 by a Torero (source: Sports Reference). Jito Kok (2013-16) had 111 career games with at least one block to lead the program.
