Toreros Fall in Home Opener

San Diego women’s basketball fell to SDSU, 64-46

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego women's basketball (0-1) kept San Diego State (2-2) to just 39.7 percent shooting from the field, but fell 64-56 to at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Toreros had two players score in double figures, led by senior guard Sydney Hunter, who had 13 points and eight rebounds. Jordyn Edwards tacked on 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals and freshman Laura Erikstrup tacked on eight points from the bench.

San Diego out-rebounded SDSU 44-39 in Saturday's game, paced by Hunter's eight boards. The Toreros also collected 15 offensive rebounds and scored seven second chance points.

San Diego's defense held the Aztecs to only 17.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc. SDSU didn't have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with only eight offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points while San Diego cleared 29 defensive rebounds.

The Toreros got off to a slow start, as cold shooting gave the Aztecs a 20-6 lead after the first. San Diego rebounded in the second as Hunter, Kendall Bird and Karla Martinez brought the Toreros within seven in the first two minutes of the period.

A jumper from freshman Gabby Giuffre with a minute and a half left in the quarter kept San Diego within striking distance to enter halftime down 38-26.

Erikstrup continued to be vital for San Diego in the third, hitting a critical and one layup with three minutes left in the third.

San Diego took advantage of four San Diego State turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.

Hunter brought the Toreros within three after a steal by Nicole Blakes with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. San Diego was unable to pull any closer, losing 64-56.

The Toreros are back in action on Tuesday, when they'll take on Cal State Fullerton on the road at 5 p.m. (PT).
