Toreros Secure Sweep of Portland

Pollock, Pace lead San Diego past Portland 62-58

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Madison Pollock and Myah Pace combined to score 38 total points - 61.3 percent of San Diego's points - in the Toreros (13-9, 7-4 WCC) 62-58 victory against the Pilots (13-9, 6-5 WCC) on the road on Saturday afternoon. With this win, San Diego sweeps Portland in the regular season in a crucial race for third in the conference.
 
The Toreros had three players score in double figures, led by Pollock, who recorded a new season-high 22 points and seven rebounds. Pace tacked on 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals, and Jordyn Edwards chipped in as well with 12 points, four steals and two blocks.
 
San Diego collected 33 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Portland's 25, led by eight boards from senior Patricia Brossmann.
 
The Toreros did a great job disrupting Portland shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Edwards' two rejections led the way individually for the Toreros.
 
San Diego got off to a slow start early in the first quarter and were down by eight with three and a half to go as the Pilots held a 12-4 advantage. Edwards and Pollock chipped away at the advantage to keep San Diego within striking distance, 14-11.
 
The Toreros and Pilots then played an even second quarter making the halftime score 34-31 in favor of Portland. USD was able to break away in space, creating 12 points off fast breaks in the period.
 
Portland continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 46-42 advantage before San Diego went on an 8-0 run to grab a 50-46 lead with 3 seconds to go in the third. Pace secured the advantage from the charity stripe as she shot 62.5 percent from the free throw line on the afternoon.
 
San Diego also took advantage of five Portland turnovers in the third, scoring six points off of takeaways.
 
USD then held onto its lead in the fourth quarter as Pace, Edwards and Pollock accounted for all of San Diego's offensive production in the final four minutes of the contest. San Diego took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
 
The Toreros will have a one-game week, taking on BYU at home on Saturday, February 8 at 2 p.m. (PT).
