SAN DIEGO – Featuring a challenging nonconference slate and an opportunity to write Division I history, San Diego will kick off its 58th season of football – and 28th as a member of the Pioneer Football League – on Saturday, September 5 at UC Davis as the Toreros announced their full
11-game schedule for the 2020 campaign.
USD, which has posted nine straight seasons of eight or more wins, will play a nonconference schedule of road games at the Aggies and Cal Poly as well as a home matchup to end the regular season against Georgetown in addition to its eight-game slate in the PFL.
In league action, the Toreros host Butler, Stetson, Dayton and Davidson while they will travel to Valparaiso, Morehead State, Drake and Marist.
The Toreros have won 37 straight PFL games, the second-longest conference winning streak in FCS history. They are two games away from tying the record and seven games from matching the longest such streak in Division I (FBS and FCS).
The Toreros continued their tradition of building a strong nonconference schedule as they will face a scholarship program in the regular season for the 15th straight year when they take on Cal Poly and UC Davis. It will be the first year in the program's history, though, that it will face three teams in the regular season from a scholarship conference. Although Georgetown plays in the Patriot League, it does not offer football scholarships.
After the Toreros start the season on the road for the second year in a row when they play at UC Davis, USD will have a bye in week two and then travel to Cal Poly in week three on September 19.
The Toreros begin their PFL title defense on the road at Valparaiso in week four on September 26. It is the first time since 2015 that the Toreros will open their conference schedule on the road.
While USD does not play at home until week five on October 3, it does have five of its last eight regular season games at Torero Stadium.
Beginning with the week five contest against Butler, USD plays three home games in the month of October, including back-to-back contests against Stetson in week seven (October 17) and Dayton in week eight (October 24).
After closing out the month of October on the road at Drake on Halloween, the Toreros host Davidson in week 10 (November 7) and Georgetown in week 12 (November 21).
USD wraps up league play in between its November home games at Marist in week 11 (November 14).
Season tickets for the 2020 campaign's five home games will go on sale at a later date, with more information soon to be available on
www.USDToreros.com. Game times will be announced in the summer.
USD enters the new decade as one of the winningest programs at the FCS level in the 2010s. The Toreros had the third-best winning percentage among FCS schools in the last 10 years, reached the FCS playoffs five times, and claimed the only two postseason wins by a non-scholarship program.
The Toreros have also won six consecutive PFL championships and eight of the last nine.
While the 2020 season opener is 207 days away, the Toreros, under the direction of head coach
Dale Lindsey, are set to play their annual Spring Game on Saturday, February 22. The intrasquad scrimmage is scheduled for noon on Manchester Field.
