SAN DIEGO – David Fizdale, a former All-WCC performer with San Diego and NBA veteran coach of 17 years, is set to return to the University of San Diego campus this Saturday as he will be recognized on the court during the Toreros' game against BYU as part of the season-long "Torero Legends" program, head coach
Sam Scholl announced.
One of the best to ever wear the Torero uniform, Fizdale is third in program history in career assists (465) and fourth in steals (150). In his senior season in 1995-96, he had 195 assists and 59 steals, which are third and tied for seventh most, respectively, in school history. He led the Toreros in steals for three straight campaigns and assists in two consecutive.
After four years as a scholar-athlete at USD and five seasons as an assistant coach under Brad Holland, Fizdale was an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat before ascending to head coaching roles with the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks.
He is one of five Toreros to be an NBA coach, a list that also includes Bernie Bickerstaff, Eric Musselman, Mike Brown and James Borrego.
In addition to coaching Scholl, Fizdale was a fellow assistant with the USD head coach from 2001 to 2002.
USD Athletics and Scholl instituted the "Torero Legends" program this year to engage with and celebrate the program's alumni and former coaches throughout the season. Each legend is recognized during a home game for his professional accomplishments, basketball accolades, contributions to his communities or for being dedicated and passionate ambassadors for USD Athletics.
Legends recognized so far this season include Gus Magee, Gyno Pomare, John Rodee,
Ken Rancifer, Rick Michelmore, Rusty Whitmarsh, John Prunty, Stan Washington, Bickerstaff, Mike Haupt, Matt Delzell, De'Jon Jackson and Ted Peterson.
USD and BYU will tip-off at 7 p.m. inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion. For tickets, please click
