SAN DIEGO – Senior
Grady Miller pitched six shutout innings and San Diego put together an offensive onslaught in a 9-1 victory over UC Irvine on Tuesday night at Fowler Park.
Miller (1-0) got the start on the mound, earning his first win for San Diego (3-1) in the home opener. The left-hander gave up two hits, allowing one walk and striking out six to hold the Anteaters (1-3) scoreless in his second start of the season.
Thomas Luevano racked up four RBIs, finishing 2-for-5 with a two-run home run to lead the way offensively for the Toreros.
Shane McGuire furnished a standout performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Adam Lopez also chipped in for San Diego, with a double and two RBI and
Caleb Ricketts finished 2-for-2, also scoring three times for USD.
The Toreros got on the board immediately, scoring in the first inning for the fourth-consecutive game this season. Lopez drove in two runs when he lifted a ball over the shallow right fielder for a double that scored McGuire and
Caleb Ricketts to give USD the 2-0 lead.
The Toreros then held the Anteaters scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning.
San Diego scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Luevano, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Toreros.
After giving up a leadoff single in the top of the third, Miller retired 12 of the next 13 batters faced including 10-straight outs to end his day on the mound.
San Diego added to its lead in the sixth inning with an RBI single from McGuire to make it 6-0, Toreros.
The Anteaters broke through in the top of the eighth, with an RBI double off of
Jack Dolak but the Toreros answered immediately.
San Diego put up three runs in the bottom of the inning, two coming on home runs from both McGuire and Luevano, and the Toreros coasted to the 9-1 victory.
USD finished the night with 11 hits, including three doubles, two home runs, four walks, four hit batters and 10 left on base in a dominant performance to open its home schedule.
Next up, the Toreros will host the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament at Fowler Park over the weekend. USD will face Nebraska on Friday at 6 p.m. PT to kick off the weekend before taking on Seattle (Saturday, 6 p.m.) and Iowa (Sunday, 2 p.m.).
