San Diego tops Iowa, 10-5, to go 3-0 in the city tournament

SAN DIEGO – San Diego emerged as the Tony Gwynn Legacy champion after defeating Iowa, 10-5, on Sunday afternoon at Fowler Park.

The Toreros (6-1) tallied 10 hits for the fourth consecutive game and remained the only team to go undefeated (3-0) in the city tournament, co-hosted with San Diego State. USD defeated Nebraska (12-11) and Seattle U (6-2) earlier in the weekend.

At the plate, the Toreros were paced by Thomas Luevano, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a two-run home run in the fifth, and scoring two more times. Senior Adam Lopez also contributed for USD, tallying two doubles in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

Redshirt freshman Dillon Lifrieri put together a noteworthy performance as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth, hitting a three-run home run for his first career hit at San Diego.

Conner Thurman (3-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for the Toreros. The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out four Hawkeyes (3-3). Senior Grady Miller also made an impact on the mound for the Toreros, starting the ballgame and throwing four innings, giving up two runs, all earned, on five hits, with one walk and six strikeouts.

After trailing 2-0 early, the Toreros first put runs on the board in the third inning.

Camden Vasquez came across to score the lone run of the inning for San Diego on a wild pitch and get the Toreros on the board.

USD held the Hawkeyes to a 2-1 lead before jumping out in front in the fifth with the two-run shot from Luevano to make it 3-2, Toreros.

San Diego built upon its lead the following inning, scoring on another wild pitch. The Hawkeyes then tied the game at four in the top of the seventh on a two-run single. USD answered immediately in the bottom of the inning, crossing three to retake the lead, 7-4.

Lifrieri's three-run shot an inning later scored Luevano and Caleb Ricketts to extend the Toreros' lead. Iowa put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Toreros still coasted to the 10-5 win.

Next up, San Diego will travel to Long Beach State on Tuesday for a midweek game with the Dirtbags at 6 p.m. PT.
