SAN DIEGO— San Diego's
Jake Miller threw the first no-hitter for the Toreros since 2008, to lead the Toreros over Monmouth, 7-0.
Â
Miller (1-0) added his first win of the season to his outstanding performance. The sophomore right-hander struck out 10 and walked two for San Diego (7-2) on his way to the record books, holding a perfect game through seven innings.
It was the first no-no for San Diego since Josh Romanski (Mar. 24, 2008 vs Harvard).
Thomas Luevano led the way offensively for the Toreros, going 3-for-3 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI.
Caleb Ricketts provided a standout performance as well, with a two-run triple while
Will Worthington also chipped in, with a two-run triple of his own.
Â
The Toreros first put runs on the board in the second when Worthington tripled off of junior Dan Klepchick, plating two for USD.
Â
The Toreros then tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh innings, with their biggest output coming in the seventh when they scored four times.
Â
The big hit in that inning was a two-run triple off the bat of Ricketts.
Â
Miller was helped by outstanding defensive plays by the Toreros including back-to-back diving catches in the eighth inning by left fielder
Tora Otsuka and center fielder
Camden Vasquez to preserve the no-no.
The Toreros are back in action on Saturday for the second game of their weekend series with Monmouth. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT at Fowler Park.
