SAN DIEGO - In dramatic fashion, nationally-ranked freshman Elizabeth Goldsmith fought back from a first-set loss and defeated Washington State's Hikaru Sato 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, to clinch San Diego's 4-3 win over the Cougars on Friday at the Hogan Tennis Center.. 

The Toreros (6-3) took down #43 Washington State (8-2) for their second win over a ranked opponent in less than a week. USD defeated #22 USC last Saturday.

The Toreros also extended their winning streak to five matches. 

"Today was another special day for USD women's tennis," said USD head coach Sherri Stephens, "The girls had to battle hard to defeat a talented, nationally ranked team."

In doubles, USD overcame a quick loss at No. 2 by rallying at the No. 3 position 6-2 and No.1 position 6-4.

In singles, senior Gemma Garcia bested Savanna Ly-Nguyen 6-4, 6-4 to earn the Toreros their second team point. Freshman Helena Francati rolled past Ates 6-3, 6-4 tying the team score at 3-all.

#124 Goldsmith's three-set victory put a tense ending to the day although the freshman won 12 of the 13 games in the final two sets.

Next up, the Toreros will face UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, March 1 at 11 a.m. in San Diego.
