USD Falls Short After Four Hour Long Battle

SAN DIEGO - After a grueling four hour match, #32 USD fell to UCSB 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in front of their home crowd.  

The Toreros (6-4) got off to a rocky start after losing 6-3 at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in doubles, leaving Elizabeth Goldsmith and Kati Kukaras' match unfinished at 4-3 UCSB.

In singles, #124 nationally ranked USD freshman Elizabeth Goldsmith dominated UCSB's Tiffany Lagarde in straight sets, 6-2, 6,0. 

Sunday's loss snapped their current winning streak of five matches. 

Freshman Helena Francati and sophomore Solymar Colling finished with back to back wins at the No. 5 (6-2, 7-6) and No. 1 (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) positions, giving the Toreros the lead.

 Kukaras' loss at No. 6 tied the team scores at 3-all. 

The deciding team point came down to the forced third set of senior Gemma Garcia's match against Dominika Paterova. Paterova narrowly defeated the Torero, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. 

"After 4 hours of battling, we came up a little short of the win," said USD head coach Sherri Stephens, "We will learn from this and continue to fight for every match!"

Next up, the Toreros will face fellow WCC opponent Santa Clara on Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m. in San Diego.
