CHULA VISTA, Calif. – San Diego golf made a 17-shot improvement from the second to the final round and tied two others for the best team score on Tuesday as the Toreros wrapped up the 2020 Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic at the San Diego Country Club (Par-72, 7,033 yards).
USD, which moved up as much as seven spots during the final round after day one's placing, finished 13th with a 13-over 877 (300-297-280). The 280 on Tuesday matched the tournament champion Tennessee and runner-up San Diego State for the best team score in the final round.
Fueling the 8-under 280 for the Toreros was a group of three scorers who all shot below par on Tuesday.
Donald Kay carded a 6-under 66 on the final day – with the help of seven birdies – to tie teammate
Alrik Pan for 34th in the overall individual standings. Kay climbed 41 spots from Monday to Tuesday in the standings, which was the biggest climb in the final round, while his 66 was tied for the best final round score by any of the 100 players competing in the tournament.
Pan finished with a 2-under 70 on Tuesday, which was matched by
Harrison Kingsley for the second-best score by a Torero. Kingsley placed tied for 55th in the tournament with a 6-over 222 (75-77-70).
Evan Kawai, competing for the first time this spring, was the highest placed Torero at tied for 28th after he scored with a 2-over 218 (71-73-74) for the entire tournament. The sophomore was 2-over 74 on Tuesday.
USD beat out six teams in the tournament, including No. 11 Arizona (20-over 884).
Tennessee outlasted Arizona State and SDSU to claim the tournament title by four strokes. San Francisco's Tim Widing won medalist honors by carding an 8-under 208 (70-69-69).
USD returns to the course next week with the National Invitation Tournament in Tucson, Arizona March 16-17.
