Strong Conference Start for Toreros

SAN DIEGO - USD women's tennis topped Santa Clara on Saturday in their first conference match of the season.

The Toreros (7-4) bounced back from their loss against UCSB the previous week to find the win over Santa Clara (4-4). Saturday's match was the first conference play for both teams.

The Toreros struggled to find their footing in doubles for the second match in a row, giving up the doubles point to Santa Clara after falling at the No. 1 and 2 positions.

In singles, USD showed their competitive prowess, with Kati Kukaras defeating Santa Clara's Giulia Hayer 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position. Maria Tyrina quickly followed suit, defeating Jamie Schroer 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 position.

It was ultimately nationally ranked #65 Solymar Colling's defeat of Maddie Pothoff 6-4, 6-1that secured the last team point and the victory for USD.

"We are happy to start the conference season with a win!" said USD head coach Sherri Stephens, "Our journey is just beginning."

The Toreros concluded their six match home stay with their defeat of the Broncos. This week, the Toreros will go on the road to face San Diego State on Tuesday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center.
