SAN DIEGO – San Diego men's basketball will add three freshman walk-ons for the 2020-21 season, including guards Jason Gallant and Scotty Prunty and forward Jack Vaske, head coach
Sam Scholl announced.
The three walk-ons complete the class of nine newcomers for the Toreros. Scholl and the USD coaching staff added grad transfers Frankie Hughes (Duquesne) and Josh Parrish (Rice) as well as transfers BJ Greenlee (Minnesota), Yavuz Gultekin (Texas A&M), Chris Herren, Jr. (Boston College) and Ben Pyle (Western Illinois).
The newcomer group of five guards and four forwards has a combined 282 career games of collegiate experience.
Prunty is a 5-11 guard and product of Cathedral Catholic High in San Diego. As a senior captain, Prunty helped lead the Dons to a CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship this past March after winning the Western League. It was the second of back-to-back CIF San Diego Section titles as Prunty and Cathedral Catholic won the Division I championship in 2019.
Prunty is the son of former USD basketball player, John Prunty, who was a member of the Toreros first-ever NCAA Tournament team in 1984. His uncle, Joe Prunty, was an NBA coach for more than 20 years.
Gallant, a 6-2 guard out of St. Francis High in La Canada, Calif., was named CIF Division 2AA Second Team, Mission League First Team, and
San Gabriel Valley Tribune All-Area First Team as a senior. This past season, Gallant helped guide St. Francis to one of its best seasons in school history as it won the CIF Southern California regional championship in the Division II state playoffs as well as reached the title game in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.
Vaske, a 6-10 forward from St. Andrew's Prep in Rhode Island, averaged 10.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks this past season while shooting 53% from the field, 43% from three-point range and 86% from the free throw line. In two seasons, he helped the team win 48 games, capture the NEPSAC championship in 2019, and reach the conference Final Four in 2020.
The nine newcomers will join seven letterwinners from a year ago, including three of the five starters and six of the eight players who averaged more than 10 minutes per game. USD is set to return 75% of its scoring from last season, 67% of its rebounding and 74% of its assists.
Hughes and Parrish along with returners
