Toreros Host No. 1 Gonzaga, LMU

San Diego will welcome the Bulldogs and Lions to the JCP this week

SAN DIEGO—San Diego begins a three-game homestand on Thursday against No. 1 Gonzaga, before hosting LMU on Saturday in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
The Toreros (2-6, 1-3 WCC) will play host to the country's top team, when they face Bulldogs (15-0, 6-0 WCC) at 6 p.m. PT. USD will then face the Lions (7-6, 2-3 WCC) for the second time this season, with tip off set for 2 p.m. PT.
 
The games will air regionally on Fox Sports regional networks and stream via the WCC Network. Live audio will be available on USDToreros.com with Jack Cronin on the call. Live statistics will be available via USDToreros.com.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Five Toreros scored in double figures and San Diego took down Portland, 78-70 on the road Saturday for its first WCC win of the season.
 
Josh Parrish led the way with a career-high 20 points, adding eight rebounds and two steals. Joey Calcaterra added 12 points off the bench in his first game back, Marion Humphrey added 11 points and Finn Sullivan and Vladimir Pinchuk both registered 10 points in the game.
 
The Toreros outscored the Pilots in the paint 52-28 and converted 17 points off of turnovers. USD shot 68 percent (19-of-28) in the first half and 56 percent on the day in a balanced offense that collected 14 assists, led by Sullivan with five.
 
ALL TIME SERIES WITH GONZAGA
Thursday is the 97th all-time meeting between USD and Gonzaga. The Toreros trail the Bulldogs in the all-time series, 21-75. USD dropped both games last year, 50-94, in the JCP and 59-94 on the road.
 
The teams first met during the 1979-80 season and Gonzaga currently holds 12-game win streak. USD last victory over the Bulldogs came on Feb. 22, 2014, a 69-66 win in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
ALL TIME SERIES WITH LMU
Saturday will be the 105th meeting and second this season between USD and LMU. The all-time series is tied 52-52 after the Lions took the Jan. 19 meeting in Los Angeles in overtime, 72-69.
 
The teams first met during the 1977-78 season. LMU is on a three-game win streak, while San Diego has won four of the last seven contests, sweeping the series in 2018-19 and 2017-18.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Next week will be another busy one for the Toreros, with three games in five days. First up, USD remain home to host BYU on Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. PT. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 2, but had to be rescheduled due to a program pause for the Toreros due to COVID-19 protocols. San Diego will then travel for a Thursday contest at Pepperdine (Feb. 4, 6 p.m. PT) and finish the week at home against Pacific on Saturday (Feb. 6) at 1 p.m. PT.
 
TOREROS DEPTH TESTED
For the past three games, USD competed with a roster of nine and has been without a number of key players to begin its return to play, including its leading scorer Joey Calcaterra and leading rebounder/shot blocker Yauhen Massalski. In their absence, Vladimir Pinchuk has stepped up for the Toreros, recording back-to-back double-doubles in his first two starts for USD. The redshirt junior tallied 19 points and 11 rebounds against Santa Clara and 13 points, 10 rebounds at LMU and followed with another double figure scoring effort (10 points) at Portland.
 
Jared Rodriguez also had back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts off the bench for USD, finishing with 11 against the Broncos and 12 points against the Lions.
