Women's Basketball Travels to UC Irvine for Saturday Game

The Toreros look to continue two game winning streak against the Anteaters.

SAN DIEGO—The Toreros will continue playing on the road by traveling to Irvine, CA to face off against the Anteaters at the Bren Events Center on Saturday, December 11 at 2 PM. Coming off an incredible 13 point overtime win against CSUN on Sunday, the Toreros are more than ready to continue their two game winning streak on the road. 

THE BREAKDOWN
In the team's eighth game of the 2021-22 regular season, San Diego defeated CSUN 83-70 at the Matadome Arena. Steph Gorman set career highs in scoring with 22 points and assists for a total of 11 on December 5. Gorman beat her previous record of 19 points against Portland in 2018. To beat her career high, Gorman shot 60% from the three point line, 72.7% from the field, and 75% from the free throw line. 

The top scorers were Steph Gorman, Sydney Hunter, and Kiera Oakry. Leading the Toreros in double-digits was Gorman with 22 points, Hunter with 15, followed by Oakry with nine points. Overall, the Toreros shot 51.7% from the field, 46.2% from the three point line, and 73.9% from the free throw line. San Diego played aggressively on offense to outscore CSUN in the paint by ten points. 

The Toreros held it down on defense with Sydney Hunter, Ayanna Khalfani, and Steph Gorman leading the team in rebounds. Hunter led with six rebounds, followed by Khalfani and Gorman with five each. Kendall Bird, Kasey Neubert, and Kylie Horstmeyer were also key players on defense with four rebounds each. In total, San Diego had 37 rebounds. 

The Toreros are 6-2 (0-0 WCC) ahead of Sunday's matchup against UC Irvine 4-3 (0-0 Big West). This is the 29th time the teams will match up.

San Diego leads the series all time 17-12 with a winning streak of three against UC Irvine. Their most recent match up was on December 20, 2020 and resulted in a 75-56 win under head coach Cindy Fisher
