San Diego Returns Home to Play Arizona State on Saturday

The Toreros look continue three-game winning streak against Sun Devils

SAN DIEGO—The Toreros return to San Diego for their first home game in three weeks against Arizona State on Saturday, December 18, 2021, at 1 PM in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Coming off a 75-64 win against UC Irvine on Saturday, the Toreros are eager to continue their three-game winning streak at home.  

Fans have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas in the Jenny Craig Pavilion with exclusive holiday promotions this Saturday. The first 150 fans will receive a limited-edition USD Santa hat, have the opportunity to take photos with Santa, and decorate cookies beginning at 12:30 p.m. 

THE BREAKDOWN
On Saturday, December 11, San Diego defeated UC Irvine 75-64 at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, CA. Steph Gorman was the Toreros' leading scorer with 16 points, followed by Ayanna Khalfani and Kendall Bird with 12 points each. Nine games into the 2021-22 regular season, Steph Gorman is the first player to achieve 100 total points. Gorman has averaged 12.5 points, 3.8 assists, 2.4 steals, and 2.4 rebounds across 31.1 minutes each game. Shooting 44% from the three-point line, Gorman made 20 three-point shots and currently leads the Toreros in three-pointers in addition to points per game and assists.

Other notable contributors on offense include Kendall Bird and Ayanna Khalfani. Bird shot 71.4% from the field, her highest percentage this season, against Irvine. Khalfani also maintained a high shooting average coming in at 50% from the field. Collectively, San Diego shot 40% from the field, 41.3% at the three-point line, and 60.6% at the free-throw line. 

On defense, San Diego exceeded their rebound average of 36 by four rebounds for a total of 40 against Irvine. Kendall Bird and Kiera Oakry led the Toreros in rebounds with six each, Laura Erikstrup had five, followed by Sydney Hunter and Kasey Neubert with four each. Collectively, San Diego had 40 total rebounds as their third most-rebounded game this season. Against Nebraska on November 27, the Toreros produced 46 rebounds followed by 45 rebounds against Idaho on November 14.

The Toreros are 7-2 (0-0 WCC) ahead of Saturday's matchup against the Sun Devils (5-5 (0-0 Pac-12). This is the tenth time the teams will match up. 
  
ALL-TIME SERIES
San Diego holds a 2-8 all time record against Arizona State with a losing streak of one. Their most recent match up was on December 13, 2020, and resulted in a 55-64 loss under head coach Cindy Fisher.
 
UP NEXT
The Toreros will continue playing at home against Texas State on Tuesday, December 21 at 2 p.m. in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. San Diego holds a 0-1 all-time record against Texas. Their only match up took place in 1994 and resulted in a 67-54 loss under head coach Kathy Marpe.
