Men’s Basketball Uses Big Second Half to Defeat Northern Arizona, 69-59

PHOENIX, AZ – The San Diego men's basketball team (7-5) outscored Northern Arizona (4-7) by 11 in the second half to earn a comeback win, 69-59. The Toreros trailed by as many as nine in the opening half, but dominated on the glass 44-25 to gain momentum.
 
Senior Marcellus Earlington registered a double-double for the second consecutive game, ending with 22 points (8-14 FG) and 11 rebounds.
 
Sophomore Bryce Monroe added 11 points, four rebounds, and two assists in the win, playing a team-high 33 minutes.
 
Redshirt senior Vladimir Pinchuk compiled 10 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Wayne McKinney III, sophomore TJ Berger, and graduate Josh Parrish each added eight points.
 
San Diego improves to 7-5 on the season, and has won three straight games.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northern Arizona took an early 12-3 lead, but USD answered with a 7-2 run, including a Berger three.
  • Earlington scored eight points over the last 5:51 of the first half.
  • Each team shot 1-of-6 from long range in the opening half, and the Lumberjacks maintained a slight 29-28 lead at the break.
  • San Diego opened the second half on a 9-2 run, all from Earlington and Monroe, to take a 37-31 advantage.
  • A Wayne McKinney jumper and a TJ Berger triple put USD up 44-33 with 12:34 to play.
  • Northern Arizona later answered with an 8-0 run, cutting its deficit to three.
  • From the 9:35 to 2:53 mark, Earlington and Pinchuk combined for all 16 points for San Diego.
  • Parrish and Berger connected on late layups to seal the win.

  • Earlington leads the Toreros with nine games in double-figures and 13.6 points per game. He has three games with 20+ points.
  • Monroe and Pinchuk went into double-figures for the third time this season.
  • San Diego shot 16-24 (66.7%) in the second half, including 4-of-4 from long range.
  • Parrish was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field, and has made 24-of-35 (68.6%) field goals this season.
  • Berger dished three assists, which matched a career high.
UP NEXT
USD will head to UNLV on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. The Runnin' Rebels have won both games in the all-time series, most recently in 2008-09.
