Women's Basketball Ends Non-Conference Play with 20-Point Win

San Diego defeated Texas State 78-58 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion

SAN DIEGO—The Toreros triumphed in a 20-point victory over the Texas State Bobcats at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Tuesday. Coming off a well-fought and last minute battle against Texas on Sunday, the Toreros were determined to end their last non-conference game with a win. San Diego defeated Texas State 78-58 as their second highest scoring game of the season following their 86-53 win over Hawaii on November 9. 

San Diego (8-4, 0-0) held their own against Texas State (5-7, 0-0) with 31 rebounds, 12 steals, and 11 assists. On offense, Sydney Hunter led the Toreros in double-digit scoring followed by Erica Martinsen. San Diego had their highest percentage from the field in the third quarter and highest number of points off the bench and in the paint so far this season. On defense, Hunter and Ayanna Khalfani led the Toreros in steals with three each. 

WHAT HAPPENED
  • In the first quarter, San Diego forced nine turnovers and three steals on Texas State. 
  • In the second quarter, the Toreros had seven rebounds with Kylie Horstmeyer leading the team with two in the quarter. 
  • In the third quarter, San Diego shot 68.8% from the field, their highest percentage so far this season. 
  • The Toreros had 11 rebounds in the fourth quarter, the highest amount in a single quarter during this game. 
  • San Diego's gritty defense forced 26 total turnovers on Texas State.
  • Sydney Hunter was the Toreros' leading scorer with 18 points followed by Erica Martinsen with 10. 
  • The Toreros had their strongest offensive lineup yet with 42 points off the bench. 
  • San Diego maintained an aggressive offense with 46 points in the paint, the most so far this season. 
  • Hunter, Khalfani, and Kasey Neubert led the Toreros with four rebounds each. 

LOOKING AHEAD
Following Christmas break, the Toreros will travel to Provo, UT to take on BYU on Thursday, December 30 at 7 p.m. PT in the Marriott Center. San Diego holds a 8-15 all-time record against BYU with a winning streak of two. Their last match up took place on January 4, 2021 and resulted in a 58-56 win under head coach Cindy Fisher
