SAN DIEGO – The San Diego men's basketball team (5-5) took the lead with 9:13 left in the first half and survived a late run from the visitor, defeating Cal Poly (2-6) on Sunday, 52-51.
Freshman
Wayne McKinney III scored a career-high 17 points, making three of six attempts from long range. The Coronado grad added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the win.
Senior
Marcellus Earlington added 14 points and three rebounds in the win.
San Diego improves to 5-5 on the season, and will remain home to face Cal Lutheran on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cal Poly took an early 6-0 lead, making three of its first four shots. Bryce Monroe drilled a triple to end the run and get San Diego on the board.
- A Josh Parrish layup and a Jase Townsend three tied the game at 11-11. McKinney later drilled another three-pointer for USD to give it a 14-13 advantage.
- McKinney buried another triple and converted a fast break and-one. Townsend hit a corner three to extend USD's run to 9-0.
- San Diego made 8-of-13 three-point attempts in the first half, and led 31-22 at the break.
- The Mustangs scored the first seven points of the second half, cutting their deficit to 31-29.
- USD pumped the lead back to 10 with an Earlington three, a Parrish layup, and two McKinney free throws.
- Vladimir Pinchuk and Earlington made both of their free throw attempts late to make it 52-45 with just over two minutes left.
- Cal Poly made two triples in the last 1:40 to get within one, but a half court heave fell short and USD held on for the win.

- Earlington scored in double figures for the seventh time this season, which is tied for the team lead.
- Townsend registered seven points, five rebounds, and two assists in the first half.
- Parrish contributed four points, five rebounds, and three assists.
- San Diego was 11-17 from the free throw line (64.7%).

USD stays in San Diego to host Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 7:00 PM. The Toreros hold a 4-0 lead in the all-time series, but the teams have not met since 1989.
