Edwards' dagger shot leads San Diego past Portland, 69-62

PORTLAND, Ore. - Jordyn Edwards knocked down a dagger jumper with a minute remaining in the fourth quarter to secure San Diego's (6-4, 3-2 WCC) 69-62 victory at Portland (9-7, 6-4 WCC) on Monday afternoon in the first rematch of the 2020 WCC Championship game.
 
The Toreros had three players score in double figures, led by senior guard Sydney Hunter, who had 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Kendall Bird tacked on 14 points, and Myah Pace chipped in as well with 11 points, seven steals and two blocks.
 
San Diego shared the ball well in Monday's game, racking up 15 assists on 26 made field goals. Edwards' six assists paced the Toreros.
 
The nationally ranked defense generated mistakes in Monday's game, as the Toreros forced 31 Portland turnovers while committing just 19 themselves. This marks the second time during the 2020-21 campaign USD has forced 30+ opponent turnovers.
 
The takeaways turned into 35 points on the offensive end of the floor as the current single-season steals record holder Pace led the way with seven steals individually for the Toreros.  
 
San Diego started off strong, putting together a 17-12 lead heading into the second quarter. Martinsen secured an 8-0 run for the Toreros, nailing a three pointer from the wing with a minute to go in the period. San Diego did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.
 
The Toreros continued their momentum into the second as freshman Laura Erisktrup got San Diego going early in the second making a layup with just under nine minutes to go. San Diego's defense generated offensive opportunities, as a steal by Hunter led to a three from Steph Gorman to widen USD's lead to 16 with five and a half remaining. The Toreros entered halftime with a 39-27 edge.
 
Portland battled back in the third as the Pilots held San Diego to only eight points in the period. The Toreros entered the fourth tied at 47, after Erikstrup drew a crucial foul opportunity and hit one at the line to tie it up with under 20 seconds to go in the quarter.
 
Portland then snagged a 54-50 advantage before San Diego responded by going on an 11-0 run, finished off by a layup from Bird, to seize a 61-54 lead with three minutes to go in the contest.
 
Edwards sealed the win with a dagger in the paint to create an eight-point advantage (67-59) with a minute to go. The Toreros held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 69-62 win.
 
The Toreros are back in action on Thursday, when they'll take on LMU at 6 p.m. (PT) inside Jenny Craig Pavilion.
