Defense Leads San Diego Over LMU

Defensive effort leads San Diego over LMU. 51-43

SAN DIEGO - San Diego (7-4, 4-2 WCC) held LMU (5-10, 4-6 WCC) to just 26.5 percent shooting from the field on the way to a 51-43 victory at home on Thursday night.
 
The Toreros had two players score in double figures, led by Jordyn Edwards, who had 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. Myah Pace recorded her second double-digit performance of the week with 11 points, six rebounds and five steals. Forward Kendall Bird added eight points, eight rebounds and two steals.
 
Senior guard Sydney Hunter pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace San Diego's offense that racked up second chance opportunities, grabbing 14 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.
 
The San Diego defense was efficient on the night, holding LMU to 21.4 percent from three while forcing 25 turnovers.
 
San Diego kept it close in the first quarter, as Ayanna Khalfani hit a jumper off an assist from Pace to bring the Toreros within three with two and a half to go in the period. USD entered the second down by the same margin, 13-10.
 
San Diego's defense worked to shift the momentum in the second as Steph Gorman came up with a steal in the paint with eight minutes remaining. Amanda Olinger converted on the opposite end of the floor to bring San Diego within striking distance, 13-12. Back-and-forth action in the period gave LMU a narrow one-point lead going into halftime, 19-18.
 
The Toreros then outscored LMU 15-11 in the third period to overtake the Lions and grab a 33-30 lead. USD's starters were vital in the quarter as Hunter, Edwards and Pace combined 13 of San Diego's 15 points. San Diego played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint and collecting eight second chance points.
 
San Diego kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run in the fourth, finished off by a jumper from Edwards, to grow the lead to 41-32 with just under seven minutes to go in the contest. The Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Toreros still cruised the rest of the way for the 51-43 win. San Diego took advantage of nine LMU turnovers in the fourth, scoring nine points off of those takeaways.
 
USD will play its third game of the week on Saturday as they return to the JCP to face Pepperdine at 2 p.m. (PT).
