Hot Shooting Propels Toreros Over Waves

San Diego earns 82-59 win over Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. - San Diego (11-5, 8-3 WCC) shot 50 percent from beyond the arc as the Toreros took a 21-14 first quarter lead and did not trail from there on the way to an 82-59 victory against Pepperdine (4-14, 1-13 WCC) on the road on Monday afternoon.

The Toreros had two players score in double figures, led by senior Myah Pace, who had 22 points and six assists. Steph Gorman tacked on 14 points, four assists and two steals, and Jordyn Edwards added six points and three steals.

The San Diego offense was productive from beyond the arc, knocking down 12 threes on 24 attempts. Gorman was the most prolific shooter for the Toreros, draining four treys in the contest.

The San Diego defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 24 Pepperdine turnovers while committing nine. Those takeaways turned into 31 points on the other end of the floor. Edwards' three steals led the way individually for the Toreros.

San Diego started off strong, putting together a 21-14 lead heading into the second quarter. Pace got the Toreros rolling, coming out 3-for-3 from the field in the first few minutes. San Diego capitalized on eight Pepperdine turnovers in the period, turning them into 10 points on the other end of the floor.

The Toreros used the second period to increase their lead as Kiera Oakry scored nine points off the bench going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Her offensive efforts allowed the Toreros to take a 10-point edge into the half, leading 38-28.

San Diego wasted no time building on its lead, going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Pace, to expand its lead further to 46-28 with under seven minutes to go in the third. The Waves tried to cut into that lead somewhat, but the Toreros still entered the fourth quarter with a 58-43 edge. San Diego knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 20 total points.

USD coasted to the win from there, increasing their margin of victory by outscoring the Waves 24-16 in the fourth quarter. San Diego fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 24 points.

The Toreros are back in action on Thursday, when they'll take on Portland inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion at 6 p.m. (PT).
